Using PKZIP® for Windows

Click on ‘Start’, ‘Programs’, ‘PKWare’, and ‘PKZIP for Windows Shareware’ to open the PKZIP® for Windows main menu.  Complete instructions for the use of this program can be obtained in the ‘Help’ pull down menu.  The instructions below are specific to backing up data in BodyMaster and TowMaster.  The functions described below are similar to what you will do for most applications of PKZIP® for Windows.

To create a backup:

First you need to create a new file by clicking the button to the far left .  A ‘Save As’ window will appear.

In the ‘Save As’ window you should first give the new file a name.  In the ‘File name:’ field at the upper left, replace the ‘*’ with the name you wish to give to the file.  It should look something like ‘Backup.zip’.  In the center bottom, find the drive to which you wish to save the file by clicking the ‘Drives:’ field and selecting the appropriate drive from the list.  In the ‘Folders:’ field start by double clicking the drive folder, then each successive folder until you have opened the folder in which you wish to store the new zip file.  Click on the ‘OK’ button once you have everything set.

In the ‘Add Files’ window you will select the files and folders to be compressed in the zip file.  Start by designating the drive in the ‘Drives:’ field at left center.  Directly above that, in the ‘Directory:’ field you will find the source of the files that you wish to back up.

For BodyMaster:

Double click on the drive folder; double click on the ‘Pbsi’ folder; double click on the ‘Files’ folder; double click on the ‘Blank’ folder.

For TowMaster:

Double click on the drive folder; double click on the ‘Towwin’ folder; double click on the ‘Files’ folder; double click on the ‘Blank’ folder.

Click the ‘Add Directory’ button to the right.  The folder and it’s path will  be added to the ‘Files and Directories To Zip’ field at the lower left.

Click the ‘Preferences’ button at the bottom center to establish your zip preferences.  In the ‘Zip Preferences’ window leave all  the settings at default except as follows. Make sure that ‘Relative Path’ is selected in ‘Path Information’ and ‘Include Subdirectories (Recurse)’ is selected in ‘Miscellaneous’.  Click the ‘Save as Default’ button.

Back in the ‘Add Files’ window, click the ‘OK’ button.  The ‘Default Directory’ window will pop up.  Here you select the default directory for the relative path.  Make sure that your drive is selected in the ‘Drives:’ field, double click on the drive folder in the ‘Directory Field:’, then click ‘OK’.

As the files are compressed you will see an ‘Add Status’ window in which you may observer the progress.  The progress meter on the bottom is showing the compression of each file while the progress bar at the top is showing the progress of the total zip file.  When the process is finished the ‘Cancel’ button will change to a ‘Done' button.  Click the ‘Done’ button to return to the main menu.  The main menu will now display the compressed backup file.

To Restore Files From a Zip Backup:

From the ‘PKZIP for Windows Shareware’ main menu, click the second button from the far left to open the backup file.

Find the file to be restored in the ‘Open’ window.  Select the drive in the ‘Drives’ field, then locate the folder that contains the backup file in the ‘Folders’ filed by double clicking on the drive folder and each subsequent folder until the zipped backup file appears in the field to the left.  Double click the file name to select it.  This will open the zipped file in the main menu.

Select the individual files to be restored from the zipped backup by highlighting them.  Then click on the fourth button from the left to unzip them.

In the ‘Extract’ menu you will need to select the ‘Extract to’ path.  Click the ‘Browse’ button to get the ‘Browse’ window, select the drive in the ‘Drives:’ field, double click on the drive folder in the ‘Directory;” field, then click the ‘OK’ button. Because the relative path is stored in the zipped file, you do not need to include the full path in the extraction path.  Once back in the ‘Extract’ window click the ‘Extract’ button.  You may get a ‘Query’ window telling you that the file exists and asking if you want to overwrite it; click the ‘All’ button.  The files to be extracted will be restored to their original placement and the progress will be shown in the ‘Extract’ window.  When the extraction is complete click the ‘Done’ button.

Exit the ‘PKZIP for Windows Shareware’ main menu by clicking the ‘X’ in the upper right hand corner of the window.  A ‘Please Register!’ window will appear if you have not registered your copy.  Please follow the instructions to register your copy of  this nifty little tool with the manufacturer.
